A blueprint for Germany

vitagroup launches a pioneering project to build a digital data platform in Catalonia

The Spanish region of Catalonia is highly committed to pursuing digitalisation and establishing urgently needed digital infrastructure in medical and nursing facilities. The health system of the future is currently being built there through a project in cooperation with vitagroup and other partners that may ultimately provide a blueprint for similar applications in Germany and elsewhere.

vitagroup and its consortium partners won a public tender from CTTI (Centre de Telecomunicacions i Tecnologies de la Informació) for this groundbreaking project. Launched in Catalonia a few weeks ago, its remit is to completely redesign the Catalan healthcare system in just six months. The main emphasis is on providing a truly end-to-end clinical data platform (using an openEHR-based data model) to unify and homogenise electronic health records for the entire region of Catalonia with its more than 7.5 million inhabitants. This new standardised data platform for the region forms the core of the digital transformation strategy for the Catalan Health Service (CatSalut).

The project backbone: HIP CDR

vitagroup’s HIP CDR constitutes the backbone of this pioneering infrastructure. The central, semantically interoperable data repository enables health data to be stored in a secure, highly structured manner and in line with privacy laws. Patient records can be created and then continuously expanded with further information collected during the provision of care. This centrally held data can be retrieved and then used in different systems—including all nursing centres, medical practices, and hospitals in Catalonia in the future. With complete records available at the press of a button, medical staff have more time for patient care.

Strength in numbers

Stefan Schraps, Vice President Alliances at vitagroup, says, “We look forward to delivering this project with a strong network of partners. It proves that we have been on the right track for more than five years with our mission of an open-source-based platform ecosystem, focused on semantic interoperability. The project has the potential to lead the way in reforming global healthcare.”

Future-proof and vendor-independent

The HIP CDR offers a vendor-independent, open data platform with a focus on semantic interoperability for the collection, structuring, and storage of data and for future scaling. Data is processed and stored in modules, separately from applications. This eliminates the need for interfaces between systems, reducing IT costs as a result. Instead of functioning as yet another proprietary system, the HIP CDR lays the foundations for all current and future digitalisation projects.
