vitagroup launches HIP Smart Integrator
Accelerating clinical data integration from months to week
New AI-native solution automates the analysis and mapping of clinical data from legacy systems, enabling healthcare organisations to integrate legacy data faster and at lower cost, without compromising control, transparency, or data sovereignty.
The problem: clinical data trapped in legacy systems
Healthcare organisations face a common and costly challenge: critical clinical data remains locked inside proprietary legacy systems with complex, often poorly documented database structures. Large hospital data integration projects have historically required teams of 10 to 50 specialists and budgets running into millions. The work is expert intensive and mostly manual, making integration programmes slow and costly.
Standard APIs cover only a fraction of the available clinical data. The rest sits in proprietary databases: hundreds of undocumented tables, local configurations, structures that were never designed to be shared or standardised.
“The healthcare sector has been held back for too long by the sheer complexity of legacy data integration,” said Dr. Nils Hellrung, Chief Executive Officer of vitagroup. “HIP Smart Integrator changes the equation. We are giving integration teams an AI collaborator that does the heavy analytical lifting, while keeping humans firmly in control of every decision that matters.”

The solution: AI-supported integration with human in the loop
HIP Smart Integrator combines AI-powered automation with a deterministic, auditable execution engine to give healthcare organisations full control over their data transformation processes. It uses AI to analyse complex legacy systems and propose mappings to openEHR and HL7 FHIR, while integration specialists review and approve every change.
Production data processing is executed by a standardised ETL engine rather than by AI, keeping transformations transparent, reproducible, and auditable. HIP Smart Integrator also supports deployment with self-hosted language models on local infrastructure, keeping AI processing within the organisation’s own environment and supporting data protection and data sovereignty requirements.
Our goal with HIP Smart Integrator is to support this discovery phase with AI, without taking away the human intelligence that is absolutely necessary for high quality clinical data integration.

Chief Product Officer, vitagroup
“In large projects with hundreds of legacy systems, huge data volumes and different configurations, the vast number of clinical data makes integration genuinely challenging,” said Dr. Birger Haarbrandt, Chief Product Officer at vitagroup. “If you want to use the full breadth of data from these systems, you still have to work directly with the underlying databases, and that is specialised, often very laborious work. Our goal with HIP Smart Integrator is to support this discovery phase with AI, without taking away the human intelligence that is absolutely necessary for high quality clinical data integration. In the end, clinical decisions and business intelligence are based on this data, so the quality has to be right.”
